Citace z The Heraldic Imagination od Rodneyho Dennyse.
In English, Scottish, and Irish armory since the sixteenth century, the Dragon is depicted with four legs and the Wyvern with two; but this distinction is not generally made in the armory of most European countries, where the two-legged creature is still called a Dragon, in keeping with medieval practice.
[Around 1312 in England, we find] 'Sire Johan de Folebourne de or a un cheveron de sable et ij wyvres de sable', and 'Sire Edmon de Maulee de or a une bende de sable en la bende iij wyvres de argent'. As far as I know, this is the earliest use in heraldry of the term 'wyver', which is derived from Old French 'wyvre' and Middle English 'wyver' and means a serpent. Unfortunately... we do not know how they were represented armorially.
By the sixteenth century we find the quadruped Dragon becoming increasingly popular and differentiated from the two-footed beast.
